One amazing invention was made in the 1590s when Zacharias Janssen, a Dutch inventor, put together the first microscope. Prior to that, people had known about the magnifying power of glass lenses; people had been wearing eyeglasses since the thirteenth or fourteenth century. But Janssen’s invention allowed human eyes to view extremely small objects clearly. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek invented a stronger single-lens microscope in the 1670s that could magnify objects 270 times their actual size.
